23rd Australasian Conference of Irish Studies

27 November 2018

23rd Australasian Conference of Irish Studies

‘Myth and Memory’

27 November to 30 November 2018,

University of Sydney (Camperdown Campus)

The theme of the 23rd Australasian Irish Studies conference ‘myth and memory’ captures debates in both modern and medieval Irish Studies. Our conference occurs at the centenary of a period of change in Ireland, during which were born new narratives of 1916—both as triumph and defeat. There were increasingly conflicted memories of WW1. The cultural life that surrounded the changing political scene included many revivals of imagery from the a distant, sometimes mythological, past, with a renewed investment in Celtic art, language and literature.

Planning on the conference is well advanced and over 40 papers now accepted range across themes of Irish history, literature, performing arts, politics, and cultural studies. An Irish-medium Tionól and a symposium on the Irish-Australian art of the Melocco Brothers will accompany the conference.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Sydney and its Celtic Studies Foundation, on behalf of the Irish Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand. It will be held at the University’s historic Camperdown (Main) Campus, a short distance from the city centre. The organisers thank the School of Literature, Art and Media, University of Sydney and the Aisling Society for generous support.

There will be a colloquium (Tionól) through the medium of the Irish language on Tuesday afternoon 27 November, from 2.00-5.30 PM, prior to the commencement of the main conference. An informal reception on Tuesday evening will mark the beginning of the conference.

All papers (apart from those at the Tionól) will be delivered between 9.30 AM Wednesday and 4PM on Friday. The whole conference will finish by 4pm on Friday 30 November.
