Colonial Mandarin

7 February 2018

Join us for Professor David Mabberley’s launch of journalist James Donaldson’s biography Colonial Mandarin: The Life and Times of Alexander Macleay.

Both ridiculed and applauded for his role in public life, agricultural and scientific development of the colony of New South Wales, Macleay had an extraordinary career of political intrigue, scientific discovery and family life which also threw him deeply into financial trouble.

An evening of readings, glimpses into the entomological collections and book launch by David Mabberley AM, author, emeritus fellow Wadham College, Oxford and former Executive Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens with which Macleay was involved in its early days.
