LCT Centre Roundtable: Zhigang Yu

30 August 2019

Our next Roundtable will be presented by Zhigang Yu, University of Sydney and Tongji University China, and postgraduate member of the LCT Centre for Knowledge-Building. His abstract is below.

Building chemistry knowledge through images

The role of images in building knowledge has yet to be explored in depth by LCT. Images have been a key objects of study for the field of multimodality and for SFL for decades, providing significant insights into their grammar and affordances. In this Roundtable I shall explore what we can learn about the role of images in knowledge-building through LCT. Specifically I focus on the role of images in chemistry. Images are frequently used by chemistry as it needs to show both the macroscopic and microscopic chemical world. A variety of images such as pictures, diagrams, graphs, charts and icons are used to represent different types of chemical knowledge. They can be abstract and complex of various degrees according to different learning stages. It is clear that these gradations are significant for chemistry knowledge-building. However, at present, in LCT there are no published tools for making explicit relations between images and the knowledge they express. To Based on the ongoing work on translation devices of images in general by Maton, Doran and others, I shall propose translation devices for chemical images in chemistry textbooks used by secondary schools in New South Wales Australia. These provide typologies for identifying different kinds of chemical images and describe how these types express different degrees of context-dependence (epistemic-semantic gravity) and complexity (epistemic-semantic density). These tools reveal how different chemical images build knowledge through different stages in secondary schools, which is highly significant for both the development of pedagogy as it can inform using appropriate images at different schooling levels and for supporting students engage with and understand chemical images more efficiently.
