Rare Bites 1: Obsession and Philanthropy: The Dante Collection in Fisher Library by Prof Nerida Newbigin

24 August 2017

The Dante Collection in the University Library is the fruit of enlightened philanthropy, obsession and generosity, and wilful overspending. Nerida Newbigin will talk about Dante Alighieri (1260–1321), the illustrated manuscripts of the Divine Comedy (of which we have various facsimile editions), the earliest printed editions (including one of Fisher’s oldest printed books, the 1477 edition printed in Venice), the commentaries, and the invention of the ‘paperback’ in 1502. She will also talk about the individuals who shaped the collection: Sir Charles Nicholson, benefactor of the Nicholson Museum and the Library, Dr WJS McKay, a gynaecologist at Lewisham Hospital for Woman, who gifted a huge collection in 1919, and Frederick May, first professor of Italian at the University.

Speakers bio: Nerida Newbigin taught Italian language and literature at the University of Sydney from 1970 until her retirement in 2008, when she retired to full-time research, and a part time TAFE course (since sadly abolished) in bookbinding and restoration. Her current project is a book on the religious drama of fifteenth-century Florence, with the title Making a Play for God.

Her research draws on manuscripts and printed books, archival records, art and architecture. She is a tireless researcher and passionate about the history of the book, of book collecting, and of libraries, at the same time as making extensive use of digital texts, and her teaching has always made use of the extraordinary collection of Italian books in the University’s Rare Book Library.
