Professor Oliver Razum's Seminar on Germany's 'welcome culture' from a public health perspective

27 February 2019

The Sydney Asia Pacific Migration Centre (SAPMiC) invites you to join us for a seminar with visiting Professor Oliver Razum who will discuss Refugees: Germany’s Willkommenskultur (“welcome culture”) from a public health perspective.

Professor Oliver Razum addresses the social rights - including the right to health of migrants and refugees in Europe which is not being adequately ascertained. There is a clear discrepancy between the international social and health standards that European countries demand and the actual refugee policies of most EU countries. He addresses issues surrounding access and entitlements to health care for refugees and migrants in Germany. Europe’s populist parties use refugee migration to promote a nationalistic agenda and border closures when in fact cooperative action is warranted. Greece and Italy need more support for refugee reception, European countries need to prepare for adequate integration of refugees and migrants, and Global Migration Governance is required.

Professor Oliver Razum (MD, MSc Epidemiology (London)) is the Dean of the School of Public Health at Bielefeld University in Germany. Prof Razum heads the Department of Epidemiology & International Public Health with a research focus on social epidemiology, and particularly on the health of refugees and immigrants and the role of contextual factors in the production of health inequalities. Prof Razum previously worked as a district medical officer in a rural district of Zimbabwe.
