The Light Side: Illuminating Life

Did you know that the human eye can only see less than one ten-billionth of the electromagnetic spectrum? Have you ever wondered about animals that glow in the dark? How can researchers see cells inside the darkness of our bodies?  Join Dr Alice Motion and Associate Professor Liz New in a discussion of the fascinating and useful properties of light.

Associate Professor Elizabeth (Liz) New, School of Chemistry, Faculty of Science

Liz New has studied and worked in Australia, the UK and the US, and is currently Associate Professor and Westpac Research Fellow at the University of Sydney. She and her team of 18 study light-emitting molecules and their applications, including fluorescent tracking of molecules in the body to better understand diseases. Her awards for research and teaching including the 2018 Eureka 3M Emerging Leader Prize, and the 2016 RACI Chemistry Educator of the Year.

Dr Alice Motion, School of Chemistry, Faculty of Science

Alice Motion has studied and worked in the UK, Switzerland and Australia and is currently Lecturer in Chemical Education and Outreach at the University of Sydney. Alice is an open source scientist and director of Breaking Good - a project that empowers young people and citizens to make molecules that matter. Her research is centred on ways to connect people with science. Alice was a finalist in the Google Impact Challenge, Australia 2018, has presented a weekly science segment on FBi Radio since 2015 and is the co-host of the ABC Science Podcast Dear Science.
