Triumph Metamorphosed: The Transformation of a Roman Spectacle

19 June 2019

What started out as celebrations of Republican Rome’s greatest military victories (or, as Mary Beard points out, “massacres, depending on whose side you were on”) were quickly embraced under the Empire as vehicles for affirming the power and legitimacy of the emperor and his house. The form and structure of the Roman Triumph engendered a rich iconography and elaborate rituals, elements of which continued to be selectively adapted and expanded to serve the needs of successive regimes and rulers, in a wide diversity of cultural and political contexts.

This talk explores how the Roman Triumph continued to provide motifs and rituals long after the end of the Empire, and their impact on both the physical environment and the use of spectacle and display in the controlling and shaping of public attitudes.
