LCT CENTRE ROUNDTABLE: ELENA LAMBRINOS

6 March 2020

We would be delighted if you could join us for our first Roundtable discussion of 2020. Our presenter in this occasion, is Elena Lambrinos, from the University of Sydney. Her abstract is below

Dancing between research and practice: knowledge-building and knower-building in ballet education

Ballet education is a great example of the significance of both knowledge and knowers to education, for it builds both dances and dancers. In this Roundtable, I summarise key findings from my completed Ph.D. study on children’s ballet education to show how ballet movement and ballet dispositions are developed in the dance studio. Looking at how dancers are developed, I discuss how ballet education resembles a hierarchical structure of knowers and, using the concept 'axiological-semantic gravity', I present a method for exploring knower-building. Looking at how ballet dance is developed, I explain the translation devices I developed for, first, the concept of ‘epistemological condensation’ to examine different rates that complexity is built by teachers, and, second, the concept of 'epistemic-semantic gravity’ to examine how teachers relate more concrete movements to such abstract principles as ‘technique’, ‘dynamics’ and ‘expression’.

This is a practical study. Throughout this Roundtable, I reveal how findings from the study have been turned toward teacher training and development within the context of my own dance studio practice. I will also describe some of the misinterpretations and stumbling blocks I have encountered when presenting ideas to a lay audience and I welcome discussion of how we can best present LCT concepts so that they maintain conceptual integrity while being accessible and purposeful.
